Just 15 miles from Ruidoso, Ski Apache offers some of the best skiing and snowboarding in New Mexico, with 55 trails served by 11 lifts on 750 acres of terrain. The lifts have the capacity to swiftly usher more than 16,500 guests up the mountain per hour, assuring minimal lift lines, even on the busy days.
Better yet, Ski Apache boasts high elevations that provide abundant snowfall, yet the southerly latitude allows for relatively mild winter temperatures. That means more sunny days than just about any other ski resort so pack the sunscreen, as you will need it.
Amenities at Ski Apache include a special program called Kiddie Korral for children aged 4 to 6, restaurants, a sport shop, a bar, outdoor grills, equipment rental, and a professional ski and snowboard school. There is a nice balance of terrain for all abilities, from first-day beginners to seasoned experts.
Apache Bowl offers some great, high-altitude open slopes just beneath Sierra Blanca Peak. Check out the panoramic views from the 11,500-foot top of Chair #6. On a clear day you can see distances of well over 100 miles. The ski mountain opens on Thanksgiving Day, weather permitting, and remains open each day through the end of March or early April. More information can be found by calling (575) 464-3600 or visiting the Ski Apache website.
Just four miles from downtown, right at the turn off on Hwy. 532 on the way to Ski Apache, is Ruidoso’s one and only dedicated tubing park. The owner has made a big investment in snowmaking equipment to assure great coverage, even on dry years. Long gone are the days of trudging up the hill between runs. Sit back, relax, and cruise up the hills effortlessly using tow cables or one of three “Magic Carpet” moving sidewalks. Experience twists, turns, bumps, jumps, and bobsled curves, and lots of fun for the whole family. Nightime tubing action under the lights is also an option on certain weekends and holidays. Call (575) 336-7079 or visit the Ruidoso Winter Park website for more information.
