Horseback Riding

Horseback Riding in Ruidoso, New Mexico

There are several outfitters offering horses and guides for hire. You may cruise around the outskirts of town with a leisurely ½ hour or hour long ride to get a taste of some time in the saddle. Expect some woodsy trail riding with great views from the hilltops. These are great opportunities for all, but especially younger novice riders. Hundreds of folks get their very first horseback ride this way.
You may also ride deep into the White Mountain Wilderness in the Lincoln National Forest. Half day, full day and even overnight rides can be arranged for adults and older children of all experience levels. In the summer be prepared for an afternoon shower. It is good to layer your clothing any time of year to be most comfortable. Wear long pants for any extended ride to protect your legs from saddle chaffing. Bring liquids, snacks and a camera. You never know when that golden opportunity comes along to shoot a picture of a big bull elk in the wild.

Lincoln County Overland Stagecoach Rides
The Ozanne stagecoach trail, a spur of the Old Santa Fe Trail, summons up many colorful stories of New Mexico’s past. The stretch between Lincoln and Fort Stanton has seen many settlers, military and outlaws raise its dust. The Lincoln County Overland Stage Company offers two lengths of exciting rides on its Concord Stage Replica along parts of this historic trail. You will be thrilled with the authentic construction of the coach and have renewed appreciation for the comforts that you enjoy traveling in your car on paved roads.
The “long” ride covers over 5 miles of this famous Ozanne Trail. You will enjoy the panoramic views of the Capitan Mountains to the North and the Sacramento Mountains to the West. You will hear some real history and occasional “tall tales” of local lore. Allow a good hour and a half. The “short” ride will take about 40 minutes along 2 miles of the Ozanne Trail passing Feather Cave and Fort Stanton Cave. Either ride will leave you wanting more or making plans for a return visit. This is a great way to get a true taste of the Old West.
